MACU’s Elementary Education Program Receives State Approval as a Teacher Licensure Program
Elizabeth City, NC – On Friday, February 03, 2012, Mid-Atlantic Christian University in Elizabeth City, NC received notification from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction that its major in Elementary Education (K-6) has been approved as a teacher licensure program.

Dr. Barbara Williams is to be commended for guiding the University to teacher licensure. She has done this in less than two years. After two years of intense work, the University submitted the formal application for teacher licensure approval in April 2011. Dr. Barbara Williams, Associate Professor of Teacher Education and Director of Teacher Education, states, “Receiving word that we now are able to have an elementary education licensure program is wonderful news. Our program is unique in many ways, including requiring field experiences in each of the four years of the program. We expect the best from our students, and we promise to give back the best – the best opportunities, the best teaching staff, the best classes. It is a joy to serve at this fine Christian University!”
Dr. Kevin Larsen, Vice President for Academic Affairs, states, “What makes the degree program distinct from the majority of other elementary education programs is the unique mission of the University to provide a solid biblical foundation and Christian worldview upon which students then build the remainder of their education.”
The four year degree (Bachelor of Science) is a double major in Elementary Education and Biblical Studies. Upon completion of the degree requirements and passing the state required Praxis II test, students will be able to request a license to teach in North Carolina. In addition, North Carolina has reciprocal teaching agreements with most other states, enabling graduates to teach in public schools outside of North Carolina.
For prospective students who already have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and desire to make a career change, there is a licensure only track available. Details are worked out on an individual basis given the specific higher education background of the student.
