Elizabeth City, NC – Following a single tragic event on the campus of Mid-Atlantic Christian University in October 2010, the Department of Education’s (DOE) Clery Act Compliance Team conducted a routine compliance review of safety and reporting procedures. On January 30, 2014 the DOE released its Final Program Review Determination. The report findings determined that the university has satisfactorily addressed several reporting/policy violations and their underlying causes. This closes the action initiated by the DOE.
As is typically done after such tragic events, the DOE conducted a review to “evaluate Mid-Atlantic’s compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statics Act (Clery Act) and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989. Reviewers focused especially on “the University’s adherence to its ‘Timely Warning’ policy in response to the shooting incident.” The review determined “that the University acted in a compliant manner in this instance.”
The DOE expanded its review to include an examination of the University’s reports, records, policies, and procedures relating to campus safety and security, as well as drug and alcohol abuse prevention. Some violations in these areas were cited but were generally technical or administrative in nature. There is no indication that any of them contributed to the tragedy, and all issues have been satisfactorily addressed. No monetary fines or other sanctions have been imposed.
Mid-Atlantic Christian University cooperated fully with the investigative team and took appropriate actions to ensure compliance with each area of safety and security addressed by the Clery Act standards. Student, staff, and community safety and security are a primary concern of the University and are included in the reaffirmation of accreditation currently underway with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
