MACU Hires New Men’s Head Basketball Coach

May 13, 2015 | News, Staff/Faculty

Elizabeth City, NC – May 11, 2015.

Mid-Atlantic Christian University welcomes Mr. Allan Harris as Head Coach of the MACU Mustangs!  Harris, of Elizabeth City, was named Interim Head Coach a couple weeks ago when Coach Neal Alligood transitioned into the role of Athletic Director and lead athletic recruiter. Coach Harris is no stranger to the University or the basketball program since he spent the last two years serving as an assistant with Coach Alligood.

Coach Harris brings a wealth of basketball experience and knowledge from his playing days at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan all the way through stints as an assistant at both the high school and collegiate level.  Coach Harris also served on the staff of Elizabeth City State University Women’s team as an assistant coach from 2007-2009.

As a local minister in the Hertford, NC and Gates County areas, Coach Harris well understands the culture of MACU’s desire to transform ordinary people into extraordinary Christian leaders.   Coach Harris has been instrumental in continuing to promote the recruiting efforts focused on student athletes who desire to grow spiritually, academically and athletically.  Dr. D. Clay Perkins, MACU President, states, “Coach Harris is the right man at the right time. He will bring excellence in coaching, a commitment to academics, and a passion for the spiritual disciplines. These are core values at Mid-Atlantic. We are honored to have him join MACU in this capacity.”

Athletic Director Neal Alligood remarked, “We are excited to be able to have Coach Harris lead the Mustangs for a variety of reasons.  The passion, experience and understanding of the game he brings is a bonus for our program.  Coach Harris also brings a depth of character to the program that will provide positive mentorship to our students.  His love and commitment to Christ will enable our student athletes to understand the bigger picture about life.  I am thrilled to know we are getting someone who already understands our culture and characteristics and emulates them in his life and with our student athletes.  I am really looking forward to seeing where the program goes under his leadership!”

Coach Harris’ tenure begins immediately, as he was already grasping the reigns of the program as the Interim coach – the only thing really changing is the actual title, but his work investment had already begun.
