Leaders at Mid-Atlantic Christian University (MACU) and College of The Albemarle (COA) recently signed a transfer agreement enabling students who earn an Associate of Science degree at COA to transition seamlessly into the Bachelor of Science in Biology and Biblical Studies degree or the Bachelor of Science in Science Education degree at MACU.
Commenting on the new agreement, Dr. Kevin Larsen, Vice President of Academic Affairs at MACU said, “We are excited to partner with College of The Albemarle by providing a venue for COA graduates, who value a distinctive education from a Christian worldview, to continue their education in the subjects of biology or science education.”
Echoing Larsen’s excitement, Kennon Briggs, Interim President at COA, described the relationship between the two institutions. “The March 17, 2017 renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between these important partners reaffirms the importance that each institution plays for the Albemarle region and beyond.” Briggs further remarked that students would be able to complete these programs of study without leaving the region and that this is a “big advantage for working adults or families with dependents.”
College of The Albemarle has long been known for preparing students for college and university transfer, including in the sciences. Bobby Adams, the Department Chair of Natural Sciences at COA, said, “The Associate in Science program is designed to meet the needs of students interested in areas such as the Natural Sciences including the Biological Sciences such as the new programs offered by Mid-Atlantic Christian University, the Physical Sciences, medical fields such as Pre-med, Pharmacy, or physician assistants and mathematics and engineering.”
Adams also commented on the success of students who start out at COA. “College of The Albemarle Associate in Science students generally perform as well and often better than students who begin their freshman year at the university.”
Dean Roughton, Dean of Arts and Sciences and Secondary Education at COA, confirmed Adam’s comments on student success. “According to data in the most recent North Carolina Community College System Performance Measures Report, COA out-performed all other community colleges in the state, with at least 100 students transferring, in terms of student success at four-year institutions. COA prepares students well for the rigors at the next level.”
MACU’s Bachelors’ degrees will further prepare students for careers in the sciences. Larsen elaborated, ““The mission of Mid-Atlantic is to transform ordinary people into extraordinary Christian leaders. We believe that the foundation provided by COA is something that we can continue to build upon as we seek students who want to be leaders in the high school science classroom or leaders in the life sciences.”
