John Maurice Named Fourth President
Elizabeth City, NC – February 1, 2018. Gregory D. Hand, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Mid-Atlantic Christian University, announces that John W. Maurice, Jr. has been appointed as the fourth President of MACU. Maurice was appointed Interim President effective July 1, 2017. Since then, he has also continued serving as Vice President for Institutional Advancement, a position he has held since January 2014.
Maurice follows the University’s third president, Dr. D. Clay Perkins, whose duties ended June 30. Prior presidents have been George W. BonDurant, who founded the school as Roanoke Bible College, and William A. Griffin, the second president.
Maurice is a retired Navy commander and chaplain with 24 years of service, afloat as Command Chaplain onboard the USS Savannah, USS Saipan, and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, plus multiple shore tours. He is from Roanoke Rapids, NC and graduated from MACU in 1978, later earning a Master of Divinity from Cincinnati Christian University in 1986 and completing course work for a Doctor of Ministry degree at Covenant Theological Seminary, St Louis, MO in 1995. He has preached for congregations in North Carolina, Indiana, and New York before joining the USN Chaplain Corps in 1989. In total, he has 40 years of experience in pastoral ministry. He is currently enrolled in Regent University’s School of Divinity to complete his D.Min degree.
Maurice served briefly on the university’s Board of Trustees before accepting the position of Vice President for Institutional Advancement. During that tenure, he has been instrumental in raising over five million dollars, implemented continuing education seminars for leaders, represented MACU in many churches and civic organizations, and completed certifications in fundraising and presenting estate planning seminars.
Maurice is married to the former Sherry Johnson, also a Mid-Atlantic alum. They have two adult children and two grandchildren.
