Calling all sports fans! The Norfolk Admirals are a professional ice hockey team in the ECHL, a mid-level minor league with 27 teams across the US and Canada.
Based in Norfolk, Virginia, the team regularly hires student interns—typically in the areas of game operations, and business and hockey operations. These opportunities are a great way to gain valuable experience in the sports and entertainment industry.
Patrick McCarthy ‘23, a MACU student, interned in the Communications and Marketing Department of the Norfolk Admirals. He started as a game day intern, but quickly advanced to oversee all social media for the team.
Patrick’s work with the Admirals led the Hampton Roads Whalers, a junior hockey league team, to offer Patrick an opportunity to be the play-by-play voice as well as head of communications and marketing for the team.
2. Mid-Atlantic Christian University
MACU creates space for business majors to complete internships right on campus within the Business Office. In a completely customizable experience, students are able to experience different business practices based on their concentration of study.
For example, an organizational leadership major could engage in the university’s accounting and billing processes and customer service. Whereas, a human resources major could focus on employee relations, benefits and payroll.

3. Local Churches
There are over 70 Christian churches in Elizabeth City alone. Not to mention churches in the surrounding towns! And, many of those churches regularly seek to hire student interns with a variety of skills.
From communications and marketing to preaching and teaching, you’ll have the opportunity to cultivate the practical, hands-on skills needed in your post-graduation career—even if you don’t necessarily feel called to work in a church!
MACU senior Charquise Smith-Stultz ’22 currently serves as the children’s minister at Christ’s Fellowship, a nondenominational church in Portsmouth, Virginia. His primary duties are developing Christian programming for all ages at the church as well as leading the volunteers that work with those age groups.
4. Local Schools
Counting all public institutions, Elizabeth City has 7 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 3 high schools within city limits. Plus, there are several private institutions located nearby as well. That’s a ton of opportunity for hands-on teaching experience!
From observing different teaching philosophies to learning tips and tricks from seasoned educators, interning at a Pasquotank County school will undoubtedly help to prepare you for your very own classroom after graduation.
Maddison Turner ’23, an elementary education major at MACU, spent the fall semester of her junior year interning at the Albemarle School, a private school in Elizabeth City. While there, she worked with numerous elementary grade levels learning from teachers and administrators.
To gain even more experience Maddison is spending another semester interning at Grandy Primary School, a public school in nearby Camden, North Carolina.
5. Time Financing Service
Interested in a career in financial services? Time Financing Service, located in Elizabeth City, provides personal cash loans to customers throughout North Carolina. Learn the ropes of what a loan advisor does on a daily basis and gain real experience in administering the loan approval process.
MACU junior McKenna Griffin ’23 interns with Time Financing Service where she is able to experience the different aspects of the company in preparation for a career in finance. With her foot in the door as an intern, she will have an inside track to be considered to potentially join their management training program upon graduation.
