Feb 14, 2022 | Blog, Elizabeth City, Featured

Securing an internship is one of the best ways to gain real-world experience in your desired industry—and you have plenty of opportunities in and around Elizabeth City!

Internships provide a great opportunity to combine classroom knowledge with practical skill. But there’s so much more to it.

Internships give you an edge over other candidates when applying for jobs, provide an opportunity for professional mentorship, and allow you to build a network of professionals in your field.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), at least 60% of students participate in an internship during college. And, 70% of companies offer interns full-time jobs.

Sounds like something worth doing, if you ask us!

Looking for an internship in or near Elizabeth City, NC? We’ve got you covered. Here are some of the many places to intern in the area:

1. Norfolk Admirals

Calling all sports fans! The Norfolk Admirals are a professional ice hockey team in the ECHL, a mid-level minor league with 27 teams across the US and Canada.

Based in Norfolk, Virginia, the team regularly hires student interns—typically in the areas of game operations, and business and hockey operations. These opportunities are a great way to gain valuable experience in the sports and entertainment industry.

Patrick McCarthy ‘23, a MACU student, interned in the Communications and Marketing Department of the Norfolk Admirals. He started as a game day intern, but quickly advanced to oversee all social media for the team.

Patrick’s work with the Admirals led the Hampton Roads Whalers, a junior hockey league team, to offer Patrick an opportunity to be the play-by-play voice as well as head of communications and marketing for the team.

2. Mid-Atlantic Christian University

MACU creates space for business majors to complete internships right on campus within the Business Office. In a completely customizable experience, students are able to experience different business practices based on their concentration of study.

For example, an organizational leadership major could engage in the university’s accounting and billing processes and customer service. Whereas, a human resources major could focus on employee relations, benefits and payroll.

The internship is completely built for you and your interests!

3. Local Churches

There are over 70 Christian churches in Elizabeth City alone. Not to mention churches in the surrounding towns! And, many of those churches regularly seek to hire student interns with a variety of skills.

From communications and marketing to preaching and teaching, you’ll have the opportunity to cultivate the practical, hands-on skills needed in your post-graduation career—even if you don’t necessarily feel called to work in a church!

MACU senior Charquise Smith-Stultz ’22 currently serves as the children’s minister at Christ’s Fellowship, a nondenominational church in Portsmouth, Virginia. His primary duties are developing Christian programming for all ages at the church as well as leading the volunteers that work with those age groups.

4. Local Schools

Counting all public institutions, Elizabeth City has 7 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 3 high schools within city limits. Plus, there are several private institutions located nearby as well. That’s a ton of opportunity for hands-on teaching experience!

From observing different teaching philosophies to learning tips and tricks from seasoned educators, interning at a Pasquotank County school will undoubtedly help to prepare you for your very own classroom after graduation.

Maddison Turner ’23, an elementary education major at MACU, spent the fall semester of her junior year interning at the Albemarle School, a private school in Elizabeth City. While there, she worked with numerous elementary grade levels learning from teachers and administrators.

To gain even more experience Maddison is spending another semester interning at Grandy Primary School, a public school in nearby Camden, North Carolina.

5. Time Financing Service

Interested in a career in financial services? Time Financing Service, located in Elizabeth City, provides personal cash loans to customers throughout North Carolina. Learn the ropes of what a loan advisor does on a daily basis and gain real experience in administering the loan approval process.
