Mid-Atlantic Christian University (MACU) proudly recognizes alumnus Franklin McAllister (Class of 1978) for his decades of professional achievement, faithful service, and continued dedication to mentoring the next generation of students.

A native of Smithfield, Virginia, McAllister enrolled at Roanoke Bible College (now MACU) in August 1974. During his time as a student, he built lasting friendships and demonstrated a strong work ethic in his academic pursuits, overcoming the challenges of dyslexia with determination and perseverance.

Following his studies, McAllister returned to Smithfield and began a distinguished 43½-year career with Newport News Shipbuilding. Throughout his tenure, he held numerous roles, including steel fabricator, welder, forklift operator, and positions in the nuclear division, materials, and machine shop. Before retirement, Franklin had four warehouses under his supervision as he ensured their safety. Among his most impactful contributions was his service as Safety Officer for the Material Division.

In recognition of his exceptional skill, dedication, and longevity, McAllister was named a Master Shipbuilder after 40 years of service—an elite designation honoring highly experienced professionals who contribute to the construction and maintenance of advanced naval vessels while mentoring future generations in the trade.

McAllister retired on December 3, 2019, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in one of the nation’s most critical industries. Alongside his professional accomplishments, he has remained deeply committed to serving his faith community. For more than 27 years, he has served as Chaplain for Boy Scouts of America Troop 7 in Smithfield, Virginia, and for 10 years he faithfully served as a chaplain in a local nursing home, providing spiritual care and encouragement to residents. He has also led Bible studies at the shipyard during lunch breaks, ministering to coworkers throughout his career. In addition, he has taught Sunday School for many years and currently serves as Pastor of Isle of Wight Christian Church in Isle of Wight, Virginia. He volunteered with Hospice of Virginia for ten years.

“Mr. Franklin has never ceased to send me letters. Whether I read every one or miss a few, he continues to write. He is the kind of man who, when he says, ‘I am praying for you,’ truly means it,” said MACU student Imanuel Nelson, reflecting on McAllister’s personal impact.

McAllister has been married to his wife, Edith, for nearly 40 years and has two sons Brian and Jordan. He continues to serve MACU as Vice President of the Alumni Association and as an ex officio member of the Board of Trustees. Through his ongoing support, generosity, and mentorship, he remains an active and influential presence in the MACU community.
