Background Check
All teacher candidates must submit a background check before being able to do any field experiences.
Field Experience
- Students must obtain a background check prior to beginning any clinical experience. Background checks are required by the local school district and the state. Students may complete their applications online on the MACU website.
- Students must provide evidence of liability insurance prior to being placed in a public school classroom for Practicum, Partnership, and Student Teaching. Liability insurance is a part of membership with Christian Educators Association International at https://ceai.org/join-renew-update/ for $35 per year, or through NC Association of Educators at https://www.ncae.org/get-involved/student-ncae-sncae/ for $33 per year.
Practicum in the Secondary Classroom will be observational in nature. Students are required to complete Thirty (30) total hours in an assigned classroom.
Partnership is the second field experience with approximately 300 hours working in a public school classroom. Concurrently, the following courses will be taken: EDUC 325 Reading in the Content Area, EDUC 431 Classroom Management, EDUC 432 Differentiating Instruction, and EDUC 436 Secondary Curriculum and Instruction. Partnership is unique in its design and extent of experiences and is therefore an intensive, rigorous semester. It is called Partnership because of the agreements the university has with the school districts to ensure cooperation in giving multiple exemplary experiences for the teacher candidates. Partnership is usually taken the first semester of the senior year. During Partnership, teacher candidates will complete the required Praxis Performance Assessment for Teaching (PPAT).
Student Teaching is one-semester long. A one-credit seminar is required during student teaching. All coursework must be completed before the student-teaching semester. Again a 2.7 GPA is required.
Electronic Portfolio
Mid-Atlantic Christian University teacher candidates are required to open a program-approved electronic portfolio (In this case TaskStream). The electronic portfolio includes a collection of evidences/artifacts and reflections documenting the candidate’s develop over time.
