Service on Sunday, Oct. 2, and Prayer Walk on Monday, Oct. 3

Mid-Atlantic Christian University will be remembering the tragedy that occurred on campus Oct. 3, 2010, on the one-year anniversary of the incident during which one of our students – Jonathan Schipper of Havelock, NC – was fatally wounded by another student. Jonathan was a student that loved Mid-Atlantic, his family, his prayers walks, and his fellow students. We deeply miss Jonathan on our campus.

The community and area churches are invited to a worship and prayer service in the Davenport Chapel on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 7:00 p.m. This will be a time to reflect, to offer prayers for peace and not violence, and to pray for the families directly involved and for Mid-Atlantic Christian University. During the service the university will also thank the Elizabeth City Police Department for their prompt response and constant presence during the weeks following the shooting.

Those who live nearby are also invited to a prayer walk on campus. The self-guided prayer walk can be started any time between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 3, and should take about 45 minutes. Those wishing to participate in the prayer walk should contact the Office of Development, 252.334.2008. The prayer walk will be for peace and not violence, for the families involved, and for Mid-Atlantic Christian University.

The university family will also have other events during the first week of October for the university family, a student-led chapel service and a special service for the residents of Pearl A. Presley Hall.

We appreciate the outpouring of love and support received from churches, Christians, sister schools, supporters, other institutions of higher education, the community of Elizabeth City, and friends and alumni around the world. We ask again that everyone remember the two families most deeply touched by this tragedy. Our hearts are broken for them. May God’s mercy and peace be with both families.

Because of the pending trial, we are unable to comment about the details of the incident. Please contact the Elizabeth City Police Department for details.

Other requests for information should be directed to the Office of the President.
