Student Life Counseling

MACU Counseling Center is located on the first floor of Heritage Hall. Counseling services are available by appointment only. The Counseling Center is dedicated to providing quality, short-term, mental health counseling services at no cost for MACU students.  MACU Counseling Center provides assessments, brief therapy, and community referrals.

What to expect:

The first sessions consist of completing a client history, reasons for coming to therapy, and a discussion of treatment goals.  Subsequent sessions will be centered on assisting you in achieving your treatment goals.  Your counselor will strive to provide non-judgmental environment where you can feel safe to address issues including, but not limited to relationship concerns, depression, anxiety, stress, grief and loss, school or work struggles, personal wellness, and self-esteem.

In regards to the community and the students, confidentiality means that clinical materials, personal information and issues discussed in therapy will not be disclosed to any other office or individual unless you have signed a written release for this to occur. As MACU students, your contact with the Counseling Center is confidential and not part of your academic record.

There are, however, exceptions to confidentiality. Some of the exceptions to confidentiality counselors are required by law to report to the proper authorities are all cases in which there is potential harm to yourself or others, instances of suspected child abuse or neglect, elder abuse, and as a result of a court order. Our overall goal is to make this a place where you will feel safe to talk about personal concerns and to assist you toward emotional healing.
