Mid-Atlantic Christian University Announces New Degree Programs

October 17, 2016

Mid-Atlantic Christian University has received approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to offer a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology (pre professional) and Biblical Studies and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Science Education (teacher licensure).  SACSCOC assures the educational quality and effectiveness of its member institutions in fulfilling their mission.

The university trustees approved the new degree programs as part of a capital campaign called MACU Forward which aligns with the strategic plan for the university called “Vision 2020.”  This strategic plan that guides the future of the university states that “the Department of Academic Affairs will provide 10 ministerial degrees to directly serve the churches and 20 marketplace degrees in different disciplines to directly influence the culture for Christ.”

Students who graduate with the biology degree will also complete a major in biblical studies.  Dr. Ken Greene, Vice President of Student Services says that “the development of the biology degree program was in response to the number of prospective students desiring an academic option that could lead to advanced degrees in medical, veterinary, dentistry, and research based careers.  These students desired training from a Christian values based perspective that opened the doors to unlimited options in the scientific arena.”

Dr. Kevin Larsen, Vice President for Academic Affairs, describes the biology degree as “a solid and rigorous program to train individuals for careers related to the life sciences.”  Larsen continued by saying “while there are many career options for an individual with a biology degree, this program is specially designed for the student who has a goal of working in health services that will require a professional degree.  We are excited to be able to blend a Christian worldview with a knowledge of the life sciences to create graduates who value life and the world that we inhabit.”

Mid-Atlantic will begin offering the new degree programs in August 2017.  Enrollment Director Dan Smith remarked “We are very excited about the strong interest in the biology program for Fall 2017.  Biology or Pre-Med has been the #1 requested major of prospective students for several years now.  The approval (of this degree) will have significant impact on the continued growth of MACU.”  President D. Clay Perkins remarked that “MACU is excited to serve the 52% of high school students in church youth groups that are looking for a B.S. in Biology.  This program will allow students to learn from a Christian worldview.”

MACU Forward is a $600,000 campaign that will not only establish two new science degrees, but will also expand curriculum in the areas of Church Planting and Philanthropy (Certified Development Professional Certificate) as well as provide student scholarship funds to the Mid-Atlantic Foundation.

MACU alumni serve in 48 states, 1 territory, the District of Columbia, and 25 countries. MACU is an institution of higher learning that is committed to helping all, regardless of income and status, receive a high quality faith-based education that prepares them for service in the marketplace or in the church.
