Full time youth minister 


Tomahawk Christian Church located in Hedgesville, West Virginia, with an average morning worship attendance of 70 - 100 is seeking a full-time K-12 youth minister who holds to the principles of the Restoration Movement.  We are located in one of the 50 fastest growing counties in the country which presents great potential for growth and discipleship for the growing of the kingdom.

We are looking for someone who has a desire and willingness to devote their time and energy to growth of the youth ministry. Duties include a hands-on as well as coordinating the teaching and activities for children’s worship, teenage Sunday school and youth group activities.  

A Bachelor of Arts in ministry is desired.  Compensation consists of salary, vacation time, convention time and allowance, and continuing education expense assistance.  These items are negotiable based on education, experience, and personal needs.

Plans, develops, coordinates and leads Christ-centered activities and programs for children, youth and families.  The primary focus shall be on growth by attracting young families in the community to become disciples of Jesus Christ.  Duties and responsibilities will be carried out in accordance with United Methodist guidelines, including member-staff confidentiality and Safe Sanctuary Procedures for the Protection of Children and Youth.

  • Participate in and support children and youth Sunday school
  • Plan, develop and coordinate ministries with families
  • Work with the Pastor to ensure disciplines and theology of the United Methodist Church are presented to children and youth
  • Represent children, youth and family ministries as a member of the Spiritual Formation – Christian Education Committee and other church committees as requested
  • Keep the congregation informed regarding children and youth activities, events and programs



  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience providing leadership and responsibility for a similar position.
  • A College degree in Christian Education, counseling, child development or other related field is preferred.  Applicants actively pursuing such a degree will be considered.
  • A background check and drug test resulting in an appropriate report.

The Children, Youth and Family Coordinator is responsible in his/her performance to the Staff Parish Relations Committee and is under the direct supervision of the Pastor.  Performance is evaluated annually.



The Children, Youth and Family Coordinator shall be a part time/30 hours per week, non-exempt position.  The salary range will be commensurate with experience and professional credentials.  A significant portion of the work week will occur on weekends and during week day evenings, although specific hours worked will vary according to ongoing activities.

Education & Experience

College graduate with 2+ years’ experience in ministry with a passion for students.  Ability to communicate easily with adults and youth, with good organizational skills and adaptable to changing situations.  Computer competency in a variety of application and social media.  Musical ability is preferred.


Overall responsibilities:

This is a ministry position under the supervision and direction of the Executive Pastor, which serves as a leader and resource in coordination and execution of student ministry (6th thru 12th grade).  All duties and responsibilities will be performed in a manner to glorify Christ and further the mission and ministry purposes of Connect.  This position will adhere to church approved guidelines as set forth in the Connect Bylaws and Policies and Procedures Manual.


Specific Ministry Related Duties:

  • Develop policies and programs which meet identified Student Ministry needs.
  • Development of Ministry structure to better facilitate communication, planning and implementation of student ministry programs in conjunction with Early Childhood and Elementary Children’s ministries.
  • Develop and implement the performance results description (PRD) for student ministry based on the objectives and values of Connect.
  • Participate on the preaching rotation as required.
  • Counsel with students and parents as needed.
  • Build strong relationships with students and parents in time of need such as hospital, emergency, family death, etc.
  • Oversight and coordination of:
    • Weekly Middle School and High School Church programming.
    • Work with Worship Pastor to coordinate student praise band(s).
    • Curriculum selection process in conjunction with Early Childhood and Elementary Children’s ministries.
    • Develop Student Ministry Leadership Team
      • Student and Parent coaches.
      • Provide periodic training sessions for leadership team, coaches, teachers/facilitators, etc.
      • Conduct periodic programming and planning meetings for leadership team, coaches, teachers/facilitators, etc.
    • Participate in budget preparation process for student ministry.
    • Coordinate special events, service projects, and mission trips.
  • Invite people to volunteer in the ministry on a regular basis and ensure proper training of volunteers.

Student Pastor Job Description

Responsible for the preparation of the Spending Plan as it pertains to Student programming.

  • Support summer camp activities for students.
  • Develop and lead Connect’s sports ministry.
  • Develop and lead Connect’s college ministry.
  • Cooperate with all Pastors, Elders and other staff members in promoting the entire ministry plan of Connect and promote a team effort in accomplishing related results.


Other Ministerial Duties

  • Be a visible image of Connect in the community
  • Lead and or teach Connect groups and Bible studies as appropriate.
  • Maintain a vital and growing personal walk with the Lord through committed study, prayer and meditation.
  • Maintain proper priorities in your home and be a spiritual leader to your spouse and children.
  • Develop personal evangelism opportunities within and outside the church.
  • Financially support the ministry of Connect by faithfully giving and maintaining wise stewardship practices.

What We Are Looking For in Faith and Personal Life of Our Youth Pastor

  1. A personal relationship with Jesus Christ
  2. A commitment to faith in one God as revealed in the Bible as Father, Son, Holy Spirit and as expressed in the Bible.
  3. A commitment to and a study of the Bible as the written Word of God.
  4. A commitment to a personal devotional and prayer life.
  5. A calling to the ministry as a youth pastor

 Educational Requirements

  1. A minimum of an Associate Degree (Bachelor’s Degree preferred) or 3 years of equivalent experience


  1. Demonstrated organization, leadership, management and directing skills.
  2. Demonstrated oral and written communication skills, including computer literacy and familiarity with various forms of social media.
  3. Demonstrated ability to solicit, obtain, and train volunteers. 
  4. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with pastor, staff, leaders, volunteers and congregation and to work with all age groups, particularly youth.

Essential Responsibilities 

Youth Discipleship

  1. Oversee Youth Sunday School
  2. Provide visionary leadership and program management for a weekly evening gathering
  3. Cultivate relationships with youth for the sake of their faith development. This would include supporting the youth in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, etc.
  4. Develop creative pathways for all youth to experience worship, education, fellowship, outreach, caring, and service
  5. Plan and implement at least two opportunities for extensive fellowship per year. This would include things like retreats, trips, etc. that would ideally include elements of Christian education
  6. Plan and implement at least two opportunities for extensive spiritual growth per year. This would include things like retreats, events, etc.
  7. Plan and implement quarterly opportunities for mission experiences. This would include things like service projects, mission trips, etc.

Connecting with Families

  1. Provide caring support and resources to youth families
  2. Train, resource, and lead the youth counselors who serve with the youth family

General Leadership

  1. Attend and encourage youth to attend weekly worship services and other activities of the church
  2. Assist in worship services
  3. Connect the Youth Ministry to the broader church and community
  4. Partner with the Senior Pastor and volunteers in other leadership areas as needed
  5. Attend church meetings
  6. Participate in the development of Child Protection Policies for the  church


  • This position will be a full-time position (40 hours per week) with salary commensurate to experience.
