Office Of The President

From the Interim President

Mid-Atlantic Christian University is an academic community focused on preparing students not merely to make a living, but to live a life of purpose and meaning.  Our roots are in the tradition of the Stone-Campbell movement which emphasizes the unity of all believers based upon the teachings of the New Testament.  At MACU, you will find a community of faith in an atmosphere of scholarship.  Our mission is to transform ordinary people into extraordinary Christian leaders.  We seek to develop men and women with the values, knowledge, and skills to impact the world. If you are searching for a university where you will be stretched academically, socially and spiritually, MACU is for you!

As we enter our 70th year we remain committed to our heritage of educating preachers and teachers to serve the church.  Today’s landscape requires even more specialized ministerial education as churches and ministry organizations seek to hire youth ministers, church planters, administrative staff, children’s ministers, small group leaders, stewardship pastors, and bible translators.  If you believe God is calling you to serve in the church there is no better place to study than MACU.

While we renew our pledge to educate those who will serve in the church it is imperative that we educate men and women to impact the marketplace with the gospel.  To effectively transform the world we must inculcate a Christian worldview in the areas of science, philosophy, cultural studies, linguistics, communication, non-profit management, education, business, ethics, medicine, history, social sciences, and psychology. J. Gresham Machen wrote that “For Christians to influence the world with the truth of God's Word requires the recovery of the great Reformation doctrine of vocation. Christians are called to God's service not only in church professions but also in every secular calling. The task of restoring truth to the culture depends largely on our laypeople.”  Those who are called to serve in a marketplace vocation will be well prepared to influence the culture for Christ.

There are a many reasons for a student to attend MACU.  At MACU you will study with professors who are leaders in their fields of study.  You will establish deep and lasting friendships, enjoy the beautiful waterfront campus, enthusiastically support Mustangs athletic events, worship together in chapel services, experience community in discipleship groups, and be inspired to reach your greatest potential.  You will learn to think critically.  You will be exposed to new ideas and to cultural diversity.  You will have great student-life events, dorm experiences, summer mission trips, and multiple opportunities to converse with staff and faculty members.  At MACU you will have the opportunity to become a leader and learn that leading requires serving.

North Carolina State basketball coach Jim Valvano recounted a speech he heard at the age of 16 that changed his life.  Valvano said that Olympic Champion Bob Richards said “God must love ordinary people because he made so many of us. Yet, every single day, in every walk of life, ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things!”  At MACU, you will become an extraordinary Christian leader and accomplish extraordinary things!

I look forward to hearing your story and how God is leading you to serve Him, in the church or in the marketplace.

John W. Maurice, Jr.

MACU SealThe seal of Mid-Atlantic Christian University depicts key features of the university. The shield reminds us of the shield of faith (Ephesians 6:16). The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, has been the university’s symbol from its founding. The open book, representing both God’s Word and academic excellence, reminds us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7) and that we, His children, should pursue excellence (1 Corinthians 10:31). The cross, shown in the center of the founding year – 1948 – indicates that honoring Christ and His Church is at the center of all the university does. - December 3, 2014
